Child Care Centers Approved for Federal Funds
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has completed the application review phase and is issuing awards to expand licensed child care capacity statewide.
Licensed child care providers were invited to submit proposals to expand licensed child care capacity in “child care deserts” across Nevada. A child care desert is any census tract with more than 50 children under age five (5) years that contains either no child care providers or so few options that there are more than three (3) times as many children as licensed child care slots.
Funds are not eligible to be used to support operations or staffing for new child care centers but are aimed at funding new construction and/or renovations that will expand a center’s physical capacity to serve more children.
The $30 million invested in child care capital expansion was awarded following a population-based split of 70% of funds to Clark County applicants, 15% to Washoe County applicants, and 15% to rural/frontier county applicants. Proposal review criteria included geographic placement of new seats and the number of new seats added per age group. Priority was given to proposals that added new infant/toddler seats in a child care desert.
